Most Useful Hidden Feature of the Google Nexus One

There has been an unbelievable amount of hype leading up the launch of the Google Nexus One. Based on the reviews I’ve read, it’s apparently going to be a revolutionary step for mobile devices.

As more people find out about it in the real world (remember, tech bloggers aren’t real human beings), some forecasts say the Nexus One will be a viable challenger to the iPhone in the global mobile market. The price tag, though, seems quite expensive for the general public to swallow or at least for this broke blogger.

In order to get back into the good graces of Google after seeing they hate me, I’m still considering shelling out the cash to get it. The problem is that I’m still quite confused about all the features the Nexus One has to offer:

  • Powered by the Snapdragon: Although I applaud Google’s innovative ability somehow fit a mythical creature into the sleek design, are there any drawbacks in battery life for having such a fiery force at the heart of the Nexus One? I’m still in shock there were so many of these dragons living on Earth and not one Discovery channel special! I’m guessing it’s because Nostradamus didn’t predict anyone to find out about them.
  • Integrated with Google Voice: Did anyone know Google had a voice? Maybe I just don’t have my speakers turned up loud enough. Maybe it just doesn’t like talking to PR2 bloggers. How elitist!
  • Built-in GPS with Google Maps: Turn left in 460 feet onto unnamed road that doesn’t exist. Great, I can now get lost on the go!

While these all sound like wonderful features, I’m still having trouble figuring out if it does one certain thing. For my unique purposes, it’s really important though for me to find if the Nexus One has this feature.

I’ve searched all over the interweb for information, read hundreds of reviews, previews, interviews and watched videos but I can’t seem to find if this feature exists for the life of me. Maybe you can help answer the question:

    You know I never had any of these issues with my Nexus One. I get about 10 hours of battery life on mine,*thank you Power Manager Pro*. I do use Google Voice but only as a ring all my phones number, not to make calls. This allows me to be out of the office and still be found when my boss is looking for me. Which is a great thing if you work for a boss who is remote and never sees you face to face. As for the GPS Navigation software, Google Navigation does an ok job *as long as you have a solid data connection*. But personally I prefer CoPilot Live. For $35 *one time fee* I got maps for North America and downloaded the ENTIRE USA Maps to my phone *16gig SD card running CyanogenMod on my rooted phone with apps-to-sd support*. Not only do I not miss that turn to the "unnamed" street but I learned that street has 2 names in my area *DC Metro area in Virgina*. It is Louis St or Virgina Road (VA)-1648. Seem all the streets in Virgina near DC have a common street name and a VA number, too. I never know that little fact myself. I don't see what other issues you might have with this device, but I for one got mine at the subsidized price, *had an upgrade from T-Mobile*, and I use my phone everyday for GPS, e-mail, chat, twitter, facebook, counting calories, tracking my blood sugar levels, finding Vegan restaurants while traveling, Remote access to my laptop, watching movies *i have 12 full movies on my now*, watching youtube videos *go RocketBoom!*, reading the news and other RSS feeds, listening to music, as an alarm clock, to snap pictures and video when I am out and about, to check the price of items at stores, and oh yeah.... to call my girl or even my mom and yes sometimes my little brother too, *since it is a phone*.

    Is the phone perfect, no. It could use a front facing camera for video chat, *which I am sure will happen with the next version*, and I wouldn't mind a larger built in memory size, 32gig would of been nice or even 64gig *two 32gig chips*. But hey that is what next years model or the model after that are for, right? If they made this one perfect we wouldn't want the next "cool" device. With all that said, at least my device is open enough to get full access to without some company trying to shut down my phone and resist my access to new content every time I unlock it... *cough* Apple.

    But hey... that is just my opinion... I could be wrong.

  • I'm a big Google fan but I'm also an iPhone owner. I don't think Nexus One is the iPhone killer but it's going to push Apple to be more innovative. Apparently it's going to take some time for third party apps to even make a dent compared with what the iPhone has already but I think this is a good first step.

    Hopefully, you can actually make phone calls on the Nexus One since it's obviously an afterthought for the iPhone (seriously, and ironically, the phone part of the iPhone is its worst feature)!
  • If I was you I'd buy the phone. Even if it doesn't make calls.
    That thing has huge ad space on the back.
    Imagine your friends asking to borrow it and then, while they are smashing it against a table because they can't make a call, they are being presented with not just one, but 4 or more ads..
  • 125x125 ad on a back of a (Dump)phone! Who would have thought. Nexus One (you say da right way!) has no game.
  • It does make phone calls, but only when Google has indexed everyones contacts. But you will not be able to find your contacts unless they have a good page rank and use good enough SEO to find them. :D

    I am a iPhone fan all the way, the apps (which with Google are growing well now) make the iPhone a must have for me as well as it ease of use and thankfully I don't have to use AT&T here in Britain. But what is going to make the Google phone the must have and eat into iPhones monopoly is its integration with Google services and also the SatNav for free on it is a real big selling point considering the boom in their sales.
