No One Cares About Your Blog Stats

Yes, I know many of you have been bugging me to reveal my blog stats for the past month. I’m aware of this.

The stream of @replies on Twitter has been insane.

The wall on my Facebook fan page scrolls down to infinity with requests for this information.

Even my e-mail inbox has been a non-stop barrage of question after question:

  • “Jordan, can you please let us see your daily visitor count?”
  • “I’m dying to know how many incoming referrals you’re getting back to your blog!”
  • “You must be killing it on the Beyond Blogging affiliate sales! How much have you made?”
  • “I’ve subscribed to your e-mail list, Jordan. What are the numbers like for it?”
  • “What are your goals for this year? Can you please list them in no less than 1500 words?”
  • “I say I’m a pro blogger yet I don’t know how to freely view your Google PageRank and Alexa ranking. Can you just tell me?”
  • “My name is Nelumba Savimbi. I am sincerely proposing to you to render me your highly needed assistance in respect to safekeeping of some of my Uncle’s money that arose from Diamonds sales. Fine sir, do you have any room left inside Nathan Hangen’s ass?”

Well, I don’t want to let any of you down, especially seeing you’re all clamoring for these answers.

I’m not going to give out all my secrets, though. I’ll save more of my stats for 84 other blog posts this year. If you want this highly sought out information, definitely look out for them. You should be able to tell since I’ll title them: “How I got X statistic in X period of time”.

Here’s what you’ve all wanted. A screenshot of my Google Analytics and income the past month:

  • I love your approach to showing your blog stats, I use to show them for a while because people constantly requested to see them but for the most part it became redundant and boring.
  • I just want votes and I don't need to show them Brian does that for me. btw - have you seen my latest post on Blog Engage? lol
  • Hi, I'm the dippy chick who visits your blog. lol I just had a Brunette moment. I was looking for the screen cap of your stats. lol

I don't make a habbit of posting my stats though I did do a post on top traffic sources only to show what works for me.
  • Rose, nothing at all against you or anyone else who does "stats posts"... I'm just trying to bring to light an alternate viewpoint for people to think about and discuss.

Your last sentence highlights the point I'm really trying to make.

But why should anyone else care what works for YOU? Use your stats as a backdrop to show concepts on how it can work for THEM.
  • Well I thought I did that by showing them what works for me. I use to just tell them to submit here and there without any proof that it worked... understand?
  • I think stats are great. Depends on how one uses them. If you use them to brag like some bloggers I know it gets annoying and you really lose interest in the person - you just want to punch him in the face through your screen because he is sooo up in your face about it. "I'm underage and I make more money than both of your parents combined" yadda yadda. We don't care, either give some advice to the newbies or get lost and enjoy your earnings.
I like to use my stats to show people what I have done and what was the result of that so I think they can be used in a really good way. Nice post ;)
  • After careful statistical analysis, testing, and your Feedburner button on your sidebar, I'm making a calculated guess that your RSS subscriber account is currently at 67.
  • I don't know how you do it, Gordie. I should hire you for my analytics!
  • I started doing my stats report because I didn't see anyone else doing such a detailed analysis like I do and though it would be good to share that info. It show's progress and growth of my blog, definitely not that to boast or brag. They say sharing ones goals with others is a great motivator to actually achieve your goals so I'll continue to do it. More support is better than no support.
  • Sarge, I agree your stats report was much more detailed than most have done, but please understand I'm not trying to "attack" anyone personally in particular. I subscribe to 500+ blog feeds and it was just mind-boggling how many "here are my stats & goals" posts there were this past week or so.

To hack off of something Nick from Site Sketch 101 and I were talking about today on UStream, the primary purpose of all content should fit within the three E's: Educate. Entertain. Engage.

I just feel that stats reports don't do any of the three UNLESS you're using it as an example to provide someone help or as a "case study" to explain how the reader can do the same thing and achieve a goal. If not, the reader really isn't getting anything out of it in my opinion.... hence my "no one cares" statement.

I'm the first one to admit that I love talking about myself and I'm a shameless self-promoter, but I always try to think "how can this actually help who I'm talking to?" If I can't answer this adequately, I then go back to the drawing board and approach it from the angle of "how can I use this to show a specific point?"
  • I agree it's been hard to ignore the huge amount stat and goal posts lately. I wouldn't do it if it didn't benefit my readers. I was actually going to stop doing showing them publicly but I got a pretty good response with my last one that I'll continue showing them on the blog. If no-one demands for it then it stops.

They'll be great to look back on in the future and will indeed be a good case study so I can back up any bold statements I may make with some statistical data.
  • Since I'm insanely competitive I need to see my stats all the time.
BTW, nice find in the couch..
Not as much as I found in 2009 but pretty good for a beginner such as yourself..
  • I only ever want to know the stats that are useful for competitor analysis and that's pretty much it.

I don't see the point of people using up valuable space on their blog by showing their alexa rank, website grader score, etc. Each to their own I suppose. :)

    Regards,

    Karl
  • You do have a good point there, Karl. I like seeing stats for that purpose as well. It's a good basis to judge how you're doing in comparison to others you'd like to reach.

But to take up a whole blog post (or valuable space as you put it) simply to show just that... does it really do a service to your readers without offering any mention of the *how* and *why* behind the numbers?
  • Well, sometimes it's rather interesting to see stats of your favorites, especially when they show them to you. Why not? You don't even need to check them by yourself.. see? Cool! ;)
  • Stats are crap! LOL I get sick of bloggers that show screen shots of their stats boasting of it lik ethey one the damn lottery (unless it is me boasting, then it is ok).

I manage several sites for clients, and I could easily get a screenshot of their stats showing 76k views in a month and put it up as my own on my 3 week old blog, what does that do? Create some envy?

To me it is no different than the PR articles that covered my Google Reader on the last update, I can see your PR, inlinks, Alexa etc... so you don't need to write about it!

Anyway, that is all I have on this Saturday morning, you caught me with only one cup o' joe in me so far, so had to rant.....
