Putting Your Personality Into Your Passions

Saturday, December 12th, 2009 // Self Improvement

Inspired by the recent fireside chat with Gary Vaynerchuk @LeWeb, I wonder whether it’s a necessity to be yourself 100% completely in order to truly achieve success and fulfillment with your passion.

Are you selling yourself short if you hide elements of your personality for the sake of appeasing others?

Can you ever be truly happy if you’re not putting the yourself – your real self – into your work?

How are you integrating who you are into your blog, business, project or venture?

    • YOUR personality is the reason I continue to come back here day after day. Sure, you may not please everyone but why would you want to do that anyway? You make much better connections and build deeper relationships by being unique and being yourself than a person that is trying to please everyone.

Also videos make a HUGE difference. You can connect with other peoples emotions feels etc a lot easier (IMO) with video.

With my blog I really try and push interaction and engagement with my readers. I try and make a solid effort to get back to everyone that sends me a message because my own personality doesn't like it when I ask someone a question or email someone and never get a reply back. I don't want to be a blogger that just posts blog posts and doesn't interact with its users.

I understand there may come a point where a blogger may get too many comments/emails that they can handle but make sure your readers know. Communication is vital.

I also like to have a bit of fun and I do genuinely get excited about things (hence happy photo of myself in my avatar ;). I know I sometimes go over the top with the explanation points(!) and the emoticons :D but that's because I'm trying to show how I'm feeling, my emotions etc through text which again is why video is so powerful.

    • Aw, Sarge! (blushing)

You've hit the nail on the head there on why videos are by far the best method of showcasing yourself and your personality. The written word's biggest downfall is the lack of tone - which is fine for most purposes, but definitely not humor. It's incredibly hard to convey comedic tone & timing when you're not in control of how the reader interprets the words on a page. Video bridges the gap virtually completely.

If you're not the type that enjoys putting yourself out there in video, I'd always suggest trying to write exactly how you speak - this could make it easier for others to see your personality in your writing. I teach this type of concept to my stand-up comedy students... most come in with material that "looks" funny on paper and then realize that performing doesn't equal reciting and the humor doesn't come across well on stage if written that way.
    • I fully agree with you Jordan, especially within the blogging business personality is one of the the few things that can make us different from others. Take our gaming sites, I can do the same thing as everyone else and there is only so much I can write about Football Manager, but I need to do in such a way that offers my personality into what I am saying and doing to make it much better then what you can get somewhere else.
