The Social Media Strip Club

When you see the term “social media” written in the mainstream press as this awe-inspiring, ground-breaking, radical shift in the connected human consciousness (their buzzwords, not mine) – do you roll your eyes and sigh apathetically?

When you hear a marketing rockstar ninja expert use the word engage about 84 times in a 7 minute interview, do you vomit in your mouth just a little bit?

When you wake up in the morning to find 163 new blog posts, 326 Facebook updates, 831 incoming tweets (not including the redundant aggregation of each individual one on 74 other social platforms) – do you smell a pungent odor emanating from this landfill?

Do you get the sense that social media is just a delusion we’re all perpetrating on ourselves with implicit collusion in order to give a sense of purpose and value to our empty lives?

Do you get a feeling that human nature is actually not changing whatsoever, but has designed a construct in which our own selfish needs and dirty little secrets can be veiled so well to the unsuspecting masses?

Do you think anyone in business who stands to earn income in any way possible, directly or indirectly, from the use of social media can truly be authentic about their intentions?

This all sounds like the same business model of strippers.

The only difference is that the pole dancer knows what she is and doesn’t deny it.

So, why can’t we just admit that we’re all whores?

  • Whores need to be lead, which is what PIMPs like me do. Now bend over Jordan.
  • You're a little late to the party on this post, dude. All you're getting now is sloppy seconds. :-)
  • Hah, its cuz I needed to take care of my local area code first... then deal with the whole international scene later. PIMP on Priority my friend.
  • Great stuff, man! I was laughing pretty hard. Love the analogies you made, Good stuff.

    My Social Media Blog

  • Interesting perspective Jordan.

Makes me laugh as I hear you talking about PC words...engage, etc. I think my favorite over the past year or two has been "transparent". If I hear that one more time, I may take saran wrap and place it around my head. :)

Do you know anyone who doesn't give a rats ass about me who sells makeup? Cuz I need something to cover up my black eye Coop-Daddy.
  • Ha ha its so true. Ok Ill admit it. I am a social media junkie and I am living for this stuff right now. On the other hand though the sites that I do care about what the person is saying I will sign up for and comment. If I dont care I dont comment. I do care about women and the bs that is going on in the medical industry but I have found people try to make me feel bad for wanting to make some $$ for what Im doing but then they are doing the same thing in a different way on different sites, hmmm. Love your posts.
  • So we are all whores who pretend to care to sell something and the people who buy our stuff are just the drooling men and women who want to feel like someone cares about them.
Sounds like a win/win to me..
  • At least most strippers don't wear masks while they dance and they are not all, by default, whores!

Not only is social media a strip act but the users and consumers of social media appear to be liberated while they wear a proverbial mask before their audience...

Stripping is illusion. Social media is delusion. Strippers seem to know who and what they are. Social media users and consumers seem to have no clue, although they pretend to know themselves...

This was a thought provoking post! Thanks...

  • But she said I was cute and funny!!! She was lying!?!
  • OMG dude that was awesome! Well said. Very funny. Very true!

I wish more people would admit that they aren't doing all this online crap just to make friends. Bah! We are all here to make money. No matter how you look at it, in some form or another, money is the bottom line. Money is what drives the world. Some want to portrait that they are above all that, but they're not!

Thank you for coming out and laying it on the line. I may like what I do. I may care about my visitors and giving them great content, but the truth is: I want to get paid: eventually! :)

Awesome vid. You had me on Crack Whore! lol
  • Richard, I think most people do admit they're here to make money... but it's veiled so remarkably under the guise of "engagement" that it's hard to tell the difference - which is *great* marketing. It's definitely a skill we/they/whomever has that would be valuable for businesses to adopt, but at the end of the day, it's still marketing - using psychological ploys to drive people to buy your product, talk about your product and earn you money at some point.

Before we had "social media," we had e-mail lists, and I still participate in a bunch of them. They're more social, actually.

The most honest social media platform is Linked-In, in my opinion. People are more straightforward about what they want.
  • I don't like strip clubs for exactly the same reason.....

But I think it's easy to tell who's "Fake caring" in social media. I can spot them a mile away. Can't everyone, or am I uniquely gifted in this?
  • I find it pretty easy as well, but we're highly invested in this space and experienced much more than the average person though. Take the typical internet marketing "shtick" on product sales pages, e-mail opt-in lightboxes and pop-under banner ads... if everyone was so adept in spotting these "inauthentic" types of marketing tactics, then how come they still convert better than anything else?
  • Tim
Even though you don't care about me, I still enjoy hearing you get to the heart of what's *really* going on. :-)
  • Who are you again?

Wait... I've made money from you...

How are you doing Tim? How may I help you? You're my bestest buddy!
  • Jordan, seriously awesome video. Caring is crucial and something that I talk about a good amount. Interesting thought on the cycle of caring and fake caring. I want money too and will blatantly come out and say it, but I still care about people. Guess I have about another year or so to where I'll be looked at as fake caring :-)
  • Thanks, dude. Caring about people & making money can co-exist, but acting as if you're completely altruistic in the way you conduct yourself in the process would be a lie - which causes the exact paradox I presented in the video.

Am I replying to this comment right now because I really care about you? Or is it because I want to instill that feeling on your end so you'll be be willingly susceptible to me in the future? You can really never know. That's my point.

Some people view "caring" as replying to every e-mail, every comment, retweeting 184 things and thanking individuals left & right for each and every helpful & kind act. Do they *actually* care about you or is it because it's a great marketing & traffic building strategy?

Personally, I'd rather not have people wonder this at all about me - hence why I *don't* engage in such a ridiculously broad scale of quantity, choosing to be very selective so that when I DO, it's of much more individualized quality & you're much more sure that it's for the right reasons. Don't you think that's more publicly authentic then?
  • Great point dude. I feel a potential blog post coming on...
  • By far one of my favorite videos of yours dude...hilarious and dead on.
