What It Takes To Be An Overnight Failure

Chris Brogan has talked a lot on his blog about what it takes to be an overnight success. While I appreciate his candor, I think he’s only speaking to a very small demographic that has the chops to make it happen. What about the rest of us who, despite our pathetic attempts at becoming a super awesome social media uber-guru, will never reach those heights… or even 20 unique visitors to our blog? (fingers crossed!) Has Chris forgotten about the little people who exalt him as their savior while they do the complete opposite of what he says?

Well, I’ll speak for you then! For the tens of thousands of wanna-be blogging ninjas and internet rockstars. For the hundreds upon hundreds of fake experts who regurgitate fast-food content and auto-follow their way up on Twitter to boost their worthless self-esteem.

For you, the affiliate marketer who couldn’t sell a blind man a new pair of eyes. For you, the membership site wizard who sells membership site subscriptions to discuss membership sites with people looking to sell membership sites on membership sites. For you, the teenage “living the life” entrepreneurs who still rely on mom and dad’s allowance to pay hosting costs. For you, Blogspot users.

For everyone out there who still has $98.64 to go before receiving their first Adsense check. For everyone out there who networks so poorly, even Tom on MySpace isn’t your friend. For everyone out there who wants to be an overnight success, but knows deep down in their heart that they’re a failure!

Let’s show all the six-figure entrepreneurs making money online that our job takes a lot of hard work too! It’s difficult putting in 45 minutes a day in between watching every episode of Lost (again!) and working as the Clucky’s Chicken advertising mascot! It’s difficult to write about what you know when your “passion” is dropping roofies at high school house parties! It’s difficult to be an overnight success when you don’t even know that “overnight” is only one word!

I will speak for you, my children. What does it take to be an overnight failure?

    Seriously, where did you come up with the membership line, awesome! I still like to bash an A Lister or two every once in awhile though, what's wrong with that, I am not gay bashing? ;-)

    In all honesty though, the a list bashing is just jealousy.... I wish I could make money doing this.

  • I'm not sure why everyone seems to like the membership site line... maybe it's something that's much more prevalent than I even see.

    Keith, you're still a funny guy in my books. I'm not trying to really bash A-listers or anyone for that matter here. I just like taking what this whole social media space is literally and drawing blunt stereotypes out of it that everyone can relate to. I'm glad you like it!

  • I re-watched this 3 times, bookmarked for future laughts and all that good stuff. I'm stuck on "hilarious", but that's what this is, or ROFLMAO to ensure all the fellow geeks get it too. And I'm getting quite confident that you'll get 20+ uniques a day to your blog, and maybe that 3rd or 4th signup to the exclusive email blog newsletter too!

    I am with Mike CJ, and love the line about the membership sites. It is so true!

    My other favorites are the "how to blog" by people who's first blog post ever was "how to blog"! I guess they spent so much time reading about how to blog that it seemed they had actual knowledge about it. Ha!

    I believe there is one grain of truth to be had from all of this, though. It seems to me that Chris Brogan works his butt off, and if everyone did that, they would see more success at whatever they were trying to accomplish.

  • I don't necessarily think people that do "how to blog" blogs as their first real blog are inherently that bad. Sharing other people's advice is all in the spirit of what social media is... Now, those that do this and promote themselves as blogging ninja guru rockstars, that's when there's no authenticity to their content.

    I'll freely admit I'm not a pro & just look to make people laugh a bit and possibly help them out with a different point a view. Not claiming to do anything more than this.

    Success in blogging I can see already from my small amount of experience and as of yet even to monetize a site that if I want to get anywhere it is going to take plenty of hours of hardwork before I can even pay for my hosting.

  • Although it wasn't intended as a crack on Yaro Starak... it just feels like I see more and more people pitching cheap membership sites that don't seem to have any purpose other than that.
